Listening Comprehension: Free Online Audio Resources for ESL Learners
January 24, 2008 by Martha Rankin
Listening comprehension is an essential skill for adult ESL learners. Our students need authentic, interactive and varied listening activities that build the communicative skills they need to succeed.
Here’s one great site that offers a FREE audio
course with 40 Units of English focusing on practical conversations and academic language as commonly found in American universities and society.
Read on for information on this great resource and practical ideas on how to use it in your ESL class. We share to impart, impact, improve and empower! The Audio Center Practical American English Audio Course features 40 units of ”real-life situations for students and users of American English.” Topics include conversation starters, telephone conversations, getting around, assignments, classes, and short talks. Students can listen to the conversation, view the script, answer questions on an online test, grade their tests, instantly view their results and review their errors before moving to the next unit.
ESL teachers can use Practical American English Audio Course in a whole-class setting by projecting the script on an interactive whiteboard (SMART Board) while streaming the audio through classroom speakers. Collectively, students can answer the online-test questions and assess their comprehension. For follow-up practice, teachers can take students to the computer lab so students can try out the site on their own (headphones recommended!). Teachers should also encourage students to practice on their own computers at home.Other ESL Listening Comprehension Sites:
